NFL Retiree Convicted of Mortgage Fraud Seeks Early Release

Robert "Bubba" Pena, a 70-year-old former NFL lineman serving a federal prison sentence for stealing $2.5 million in payments on home loans sold as government-backed securities, has asked for early release due to the coronavirus. So reports Law360.

Pena’s motion for compassionate release cited studies showing that the COVID-19 pandemic is disproportionately killing African-Americans.

The former Cleveland Browns player was sentenced to 32 months last April after pleading guilty for allegedly taking lump sums from borrowers, depositing them in his own account and lying to the Government National Mortgage Association.
