Mortgage Fraudster, Invoking Roger Stone, Gets Light Sentence

A California man who pleaded guilty in a massive mortgage fraud got a surprisingly light sentence after his defense lawyer cited the controversial sentencing of Trump associate Roger Stone to argue against prison time. So reports The Sacramento Bee.

Andrey Kim, 36, was sentenced to 13 months of home detention. Prosecutors had recommended 13 months in prison.

A lawyer for Kim, a loan officer who was a relatively minor player in the $16 million case, invoked the shortened sentence for Stone. The sentence followed tweets from President Trump criticizing prosecutors’ original sentencing recommendations.

The ordeal has cast doubt onto the meaningfulness of federal sentencing guidelines.
