Academy Mortgage Settles Underwriting Fraud Case for $38.5M

Academy Mortgage Corp. has agreed to pay $38.5 million to resolve allegations it violated the False Claims Act by improperly originating and underwriting mortgages backed by the Federal Housing Administration. So reports United Press International.

Academy MortgageGwen Thrower, a former underwriter at the Utah-based mortgage company who filed the lawsuit as a whistleblower claim, will receive more than $11.5 million as her share of the settlement.

As The Mortgage Leader previously reported, the Trump administration’s Department of Justice had argued the case was too burdensome to pursue, but its effort to dismiss the case was shot down by the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals.
