One Spicy Neighborhood: FHFA Flags Evidence of Racial Bias in Home Appraisals

Some home appraisers still use potentially race-related language in neighborhood descriptions used for home valuations, a study by the Federal Housing Finance Agency has found. So reports MarketWatch.

FHFAThe FHFA cited multiple examples of appraisers using language that referred to an area’s racial makeup or immigrant population, with the most egregious being that an area with an influx of immigrants was described as “one spicy neighborhood.”

The study didn’t say if appraisals with language indicating possible bias were linked with lower property valuations.
